What it is approved for

The label says, word for word:

When it must not be used

RECONCILE chewable tablets are contraindicated for use in dogs with epilepsy or a history of seizures. RECONCILE chewable tablets should not be given concomitantly with drugs that lower the seizure threshold (e.g., phenothiazines such as acepromazine or chlorpromazine).

What the label warns about

Not for use in humans. Keep out of reach of children. In case of accidental ingestion seek medical attention immediately.
In humans, the most common symptoms associated with over dosage include seizures, somnolence, nausea, tachycardia, and vomiting. In case of ingestion by a human, contact a physician immediately.
RECONCILE chewable tablets are not recommended for the treatment of aggression. RECONCILE chewable tablets have not been clinically tested for the treatment of other behavioral disorders.
Studies to determine the effects of RECONCILE chewable tablets in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs and in patients less than 6 months of age have not been conducted.
Seizures may occur in dogs treated with RECONCILE chewable tablets, even in dogs without a history of epilepsy or seizures.

What turned up in the studies

Every approved medicine has a field study behind it, and the label prints what happened:

Label: "In two North American multi-site field studies, which included a total of 427 dogs, the following adverse reactions were observed:" (the label's Table 3 is an image on DailyMed; figures below are from the FDA Freedom of Information Summary, Table 3, Study T8E420001, Fluoxetine N=117 / Control N=112): Calm/Lethargy/Depression 53 (45.3%) / 19 (17.0%); Anorexia/Decreased Appetite 34 (29.1%) / 12 (10.7%);…

Stop and call the vet if

From the sheet the maker writes for owners:

Worth knowing

Approved by FDA under NADA #141-272; the FDA Freedom of Information Summary gives "Date of Approval: January 19, 2007" with sponsor "Elanco Animal Health, A Division of Eli Lilly & Co."; the current DailyMed label is manufactured by Pegasus Laboratories, Inc. (PRN Pharmacal appears on the label as associated with the product). A fourth contraindication sentence on the label: "RECONCILE chewable tablets are contraindicated in dogs with a known hypersensitivity to fluoxetine HCl or other SSRIs."

What to ask your vet

No doses on this page, on purpose. The dose depends on the animal's weight, age, kidneys, liver and everything else they take. That is the vet's job, and the label they are working from is linked below. Never start, stop or change a medication on your own.
Not sure it can wait?

The emergency page sorts the signs by how long you have, and the symptom checker asks what you are seeing. Reactions to a medicine can also be reported to the FDA yourself: how to report a problem.

Everyday questions, answered from the paperwork

These answers come from the approved label on DailyMed, read on 2 October 2026. Where the label does not say, the answer says so, and the vet or the pharmacist is the one to ask.

What is it for?

The approved use is quoted at the top of this page. It is given to dogs for separation anxiety, together with a behavior modification plan, which the label also calls a simple training plan that the owner carries out.

How soon does it work?

The label says some dogs may show improvement within 1 to 2 weeks of starting, and others may take as long as 8 weeks. In its 8-week study, 42% of the dogs on Reconcile showed improvement within the first week, against 18% of the dogs that had the training plan alone, and by the end 73% showed significant improvement, against 51%. If there is no improvement within 8 weeks, the label says the vet will discuss other treatment plans.

How do I give it?

It is a flavored chewable tablet that the label says most dogs eat readily, and it can be given with or without food. If your dog will not take it, the label says it may be offered in food or given like any other tablet. It is given alongside the training plan, and the vet says how much to give. The label says its use for longer than 8 weeks has not been evaluated.

What if I miss a dose?

The label says: "If a dose is missed, the next scheduled dose should be given as prescribed." It adds that the dose should not be increased or doubled.

What side effects should I watch for?

The studies and the warnings are quoted above. The owner section of the label calls seizures the most serious side effect, and says some dogs may seem calmer or more sluggish. It does not say what to do if a seizure happens. It says the vet can best describe the side effects and discuss what to do if you see anything unexpected, so ask about that before you start, and call the vet if a seizure happens. It also says to contact the vet if your dog has been given more than the prescribed amount.

How do I store it?

Store it at room temperature, between 68° and 77°F; the label allows short spells between 59° and 86°F. Leave the drying packet in the bottle and close the bottle completely between uses. Keep it out of the reach of children. If a person swallows it, the label says to seek medical attention immediately.

What do I do with leftovers?

The FDA says the best way to get rid of most unused or expired medicines is a take-back option: a drug take-back location, which can be at a pharmacy or a police station, or a prepaid mail-back envelope. If you cannot use one and the medicine is not on the FDA's flush list, the FDA says to mix it, uncrushed, with something unappealing such as dirt, cat litter or used coffee grounds and to seal the mixture in a plastic bag before throwing it away. Flushing is only for medicines on that list, such as opioids. Do not give leftovers to another pet.
