What actually separates them

The honest downside of each

Great Pyrenees

Bred to guard livestock alone through the night, a Great Pyrenees will bark for hours at anything that moves after dark — that's the working trait doing its job, not a behavior problem, and it makes the breed a poor fit for close neighbors or apartment walls.

Saint Bernard

A dog this size shouldn't be dying at 8 to 10 years old, but that's the typical lifespan for a Saint Bernard — add in constant drooling, real bloat risk, and a genuine chance of four-figure vet bills for hip dysplasia or bone cancer, and the 'gentle giant' image sold at pickup rarely matches the true lifetime cost.
