What actually separates them
Calmer of the two is the Dachshund. The one that needs more exercise is the Beagle.
Dachshund tends to live longer — 12-16 years against 10-15 years.
With young children, Beagle is the safer default — Dachshund is listed as "With supervision".
The honest downside of each
Beagle
A Beagle's nose runs the dog, not the owner — bred to follow a scent trail for miles regardless of what the handler wants, so unreliable off-leash recall is a breed trait, not a training failure, and a bored, under-exercised Beagle is one of the most vocal and destructive small breeds there is.
Dachshund
That long back and short legs aren't just a cute silhouette — they're a genuine spinal deformity (chondrodystrophy) that gives Dachshunds one of the highest disc-disease rates of any breed, and a dog that's jumped off the couch for years without incident can still end up suddenly paralyzed.
