What actually separates them

The honest downside of each

Australian Cattle Dog

This dog was bred to nip the heels of running cattle all day, and a bored, under-exercised Cattle Dog will redirect that instinct onto joggers, bicycles, other pets, and children's ankles — it is not a mellow companion breed no matter how it looks in photos.

Standard Schnauzer

Like other wire-coated 'low-shedding' breeds, a Standard Schnauzer is not allergen-free — people with dog allergies react to dander and saliva proteins, not shed hair, so a low-shedding coat cuts down on mess but doesn't guarantee an allergic household will tolerate the breed, and the wiry coat still needs hand-stripping or clipping every few months for life.
