The Turkish Van's popular reputation as a friendly, water-loving lap cat doesn't fully match the data — a 2021 behavioral study found the breed scores above average for fearfulness and aggression toward humans and below average for sociability and stress tolerance, and solid-white individuals, especially blue-eyed ones, carry a well-documented elevated risk of congenital deafness.

Living with a Turkish Van

Turkish Vans are large, athletic, and genuinely independent-minded — most 'are not normally lap cats' by the breed's own official description, and some individuals are warier of handling than their popular reputation suggests. The famous water-loving trait is real in some individual cats but isn't a guaranteed breed trait, and the semi-long coat is lower-maintenance than it looks thanks to its single-layer, water-resistant structure.
