What you won't hear at the sale

Sphynx cats are sold as hypoallergenic because they lack fur, but the protein that actually triggers most cat allergies (Fel d 1) comes from skin and saliva, not hair, so a Sphynx still produces it — it just has no coat to catch the oil, which is why the breed needs weekly bathing for its own skin health, and why a 2024 UK-wide study found the breed's real-world average lifespan (6.7 years) was the shortest of any cat breed studied, well under half the general Persian/Birman-range longevity of other purebreds.

Measured lifespan

6.68years, life expectancy at birth

5.1 years below the all-cat life expectancy at birth of 11.74.

Measured, not estimated: worked out from 7,936 UK cats that died in 2019 under veterinary care. Based on 18 deaths of this breed. 95% confidence interval 4.53 to 8.83 years. Life expectancy at birth is the average a kitten of this breed could expect; a cat that is already an adult has a longer expected total, because it has got past the risky early years. UK cats, so treat it as the best available figure rather than a promise about yours.

Health tests to ask the breeder for

There is no CHIC program for cats. These are the DNA and screening tests that the testing laboratories and cat health bodies name for the Sphynx. A breeder who tests will show the certificates; a DNA result of "clear" for one variant is not a guarantee against the disease.

When to spay or neuter: by five months, whatever the breed. That is the one answer the AVMA, the feline practitioners and AAHA all give, and the spay and neuter page has why, and the two weeks after.

Living with a Sphynx

ExtrovertedAffectionateEnergeticAttention-seeking

This is a highly social, people-obsessed, energetic cat that will actively follow you around the house and burrow under blankets for warmth, since its body runs warmer and it gets cold easily with no coat to trap heat. The tradeoff for 'no shedding' is one of the highest-maintenance skin-care routines of any breed — weekly bathing, ear cleaning, and nail-bed cleaning are not optional — and despite the marketing, this is not a safe choice for most people with genuine cat allergies.
