Shiba Inus are marketed online as 'cat-like' and low-maintenance because of their small size, but this is a primitive hunting breed with real dog-selective and small-animal prey drive, an ear-splitting shriek ('the Shiba scream') when frustrated, and recall so unreliable that owners are told never to trust one off-leash — it is not a beginner's breed.

Measured lifespan

14.6years, median

2.1 years above the all-dog median of 12.5.

Measured, not estimated: the middle age at death across 584,734 UK dogs, 284,734 of them deceased. Based on 514 dogs of this breed. 95% confidence interval 14 to 15.1 years. Half lived longer than this, half did not. UK dogs, so treat it as the best available figure rather than a promise about yours.

In the same study, small breeds as a group had a median of 12.7 years and medium-muzzled breeds 12.8. This breed is small and medium-muzzled.

Health tests to ask the breeder for

National Shiba Club of America sets the tests a Shiba Inu needs for a CHIC number in the OFA's open database. A CHIC number means the tests were done and the results are public. It does not mean the dog passed them: ask for the results for both parents, or look them up yourself on ofa.org.

Required for a CHIC number
  • Hip Dysplasia (OFA Evaluation or PennHIP Evaluation, 24 months)
  • Eye Examination by a boarded ACVO Ophthalmologist (results registered with OFA or CERF)
  • Patellar Luxation (licensed veterinarian; results registered with OFA)

When to spay or neuter: the guidelines split at 45 pounds grown, five to six months under it and after growth is complete over it, and the UC Davis study gives a guideline by breed for 35 breeds. The spay and neuter page has both, and the two weeks after.

Also recommended
  • GM1 / GM2 Gangliosidosis (Shiba Inu type) DNA tests (identified in breed; AKC DNA list)

Living with a Shiba Inu

IndependentBoldAlertAloof with strangersStrong prey drive

Shiba Inus are clean, quiet-ish, and genuinely low-shedding in day-to-day brushing terms, but they blow their coat dramatically twice a year, are notoriously difficult to recall off-leash because of prey drive, and will simply ignore a command they find pointless — training has to be reward-based and consistent, not forceful. Many are dog-selective and need careful, ongoing socialization rather than assuming they'll be naturally friendly with other dogs.
