What you won't hear at the sale

This is a serious guardian breed bred for bite work, not a family pet that happens to be big — Cane Corsos need early, extensive socialization and an experienced, confident handler, and without it their natural wariness of strangers can become a real liability; several insurers and some jurisdictions already restrict or exclude the breed.

Measured lifespan

8.1years, median

4.4 years below the all-dog median of 12.5.

Measured, not estimated: the middle age at death across 584,734 UK dogs, 284,734 of them deceased. Based on 303 dogs of this breed. 95% confidence interval 6.5 to 9.5 years. Half lived longer than this, half did not. UK dogs, so treat it as the best available figure rather than a promise about yours.

In the same study, large breeds as a group had a median of 11.9 years and flat-faced breeds 11.2. This breed is large and flat-faced.

Health tests to ask the breeder for

Cane Corso Association of America sets the tests a Cane Corso needs for a CHIC number in the OFA's open database. A CHIC number means the tests were done and the results are public. It does not mean the dog passed them: ask for the results for both parents, or look them up yourself on ofa.org.

Required for a CHIC number
  • Hip Dysplasia (OFA Evaluation or PennHIP Evaluation)
  • Elbow Dysplasia (OFA Evaluation)
  • Cardiac Evaluation (OFA)
  • Patellar Luxation (OFA Evaluation)
  • Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) DNA test
  • Dental-Skeletal-Retinal Anomaly (DSRA) DNA test

When to spay or neuter: the guidelines split at 45 pounds grown, five to six months under it and after growth is complete over it, and the UC Davis study gives a guideline by breed for 35 breeds. The spay and neuter page has both, and the two weeks after.

Test names as the club lists them; checked September 2026. OFA CHIC breed page. How to use this at the breeder: check a breeder.

Living with a Cane Corso

ProtectiveLoyalConfidentIntelligent

Cane Corsos are calm and steady in an experienced home, but this is not a first dog or a casual choice — they're powerful enough that basic obedience isn't optional, they take real training and socialization investment through adolescence, and their guarding instinct means visitors and unfamiliar dogs need to be managed deliberately rather than left to work themselves out. Exercise needs are real but somewhat more moderate than a GSP or Aussie; the bigger daily demand is consistent leadership and structure.
