What you won't hear at the sale

Bengals carry real wild ancestor genetics from the Asian leopard cat, and depending how many generations removed a kitten is from that wild parent (F1 through F4), owning one is unrestricted, permit-only, or flatly illegal depending on your US state or city — a fact many sellers never mention until after money changes hands.

Measured lifespan

8.51years, life expectancy at birth

3.2 years below the all-cat life expectancy at birth of 11.74.

Measured, not estimated: worked out from 7,936 UK cats that died in 2019 under veterinary care. Based on 73 deaths of this breed. 95% confidence interval 7.12 to 9.9 years. Life expectancy at birth is the average a kitten of this breed could expect; a cat that is already an adult has a longer expected total, because it has got past the risky early years. UK cats, so treat it as the best available figure rather than a promise about yours.

Health tests to ask the breeder for

There is no CHIC program for cats. These are the DNA and screening tests that the testing laboratories and cat health bodies name for the Bengal. A breeder who tests will show the certificates; a DNA result of "clear" for one variant is not a guarantee against the disease.

When to spay or neuter: by five months, whatever the breed. That is the one answer the AVMA, the feline practitioners and AAHA all give, and the spay and neuter page has why, and the two weeks after.

Living with a Bengal

AthleticIntelligentTerritorialHigh prey driveVocal

Bengals are built for constant motion: intensely athletic, need serious daily physical and mental stimulation, and many are not especially cuddly or tolerant of being held or restrained, so the 'wild-looking lap cat' marketing undersells how demanding this breed is, especially for a first-time owner or a home with small children. Before buying, check your state and city laws specifically — generation (F1-F4) determines whether ownership is unrestricted, permit-only, or banned outright where you live, and enforcement is real in places like Hawaii and New York City.
